Toponymy is the science that studies the names of places (toponyms). It proposes to search their meaning, their etymology, but also their transformations over the centuries. With the anthroponymy (study of names of people), it is part of the onomastics (the study of proper names), itself a branch of linguistics. The name of the inhabitants arising from place names is the ethnonym or the gentilic.

The field of toponymy is vast. This science is indeed studying the names of populated places (towns, villages, hamlets and differences) or unmanned (places), but also the names related to terrain, rivers, channels of communication (roads, streets). It can also cover smaller areas (names of villas or hotels, for example).
